Gravity. The Alex Cave Series Book 4 by James M. Corkill

In James M. Corkill’s fourth book in the Alex Cave series, Gravity, readers are immediately thrust into the adventurous life of Alex Cave. He begins as a professor in Bozeman, Montana, questioning his decision to settle for a calmer life. As if directed by fate, he receives a call to head up an important investigation. Sensing the urgency of the call, Alex immediately leaves his loved ones and travels to a geological emergency in Iceland. Although threatened with the possibility of losing his beloved girlfriend, he decides to leave for another life or death mission with his partner, Okana. While exploring an expired lava tube in search for a gravity device, he encounters thieves of a very dangerous sort, and they are after the very same prize as Alex.

Sloan and Essex, an evil duo who are after the device so they can benefit monetarily, threaten their safety and eventually the lives of their loved ones. What should have been a search and find mission, turns into trouble. Sloan and Essex retrieve the device. Once they abscond with the 180-million-year-old alien artifact, they accidentally activate it, causing satellites to come crashing out of space, the moon changing its orbit, and tides to ebb and flow in catastrophic ways.

Alex and Okana are sent to find the device stolen by Sloan and Essex and shut it down. They are joined by a team of experts that includes a NASA employee who can safely disarm this device. In the meantime, coastal towns are suffering death and destruction due to the moon’s unexpected activity. In addition to the earthly concerns, the scientists are plagued with a new threat. An asteroid first thought to miss Earth is barreling down to it and is set on a path for global destruction. If Alex and Okana don’t get to the asteroid in time to save humanity, the Earth will cease to exist.

The author does a nice job of coupling suspense with drama; science with fiction; and success with heartache. The fourth book can be read on its own, and readers do not have to have read the first three in the series in order to join in the action. The author’s main characters are strongĀ and likable. If readers are looking for a book that provides a roller coaster of emotion, this fourth book is a good choice.
