Celebrating Two Years of Family Footnote

Two years of Family Footnote equals 266 shared posts for our readers, friends, and family. It is an almost unbelievable feat, considering Tessa had to convince me to start a writing blog with her. I had so many doubts and questions about starting Family Footnote. Would Tessa and I have the time to write a weekly blog? Would it be any good? Could Tessa and I work well together? Would the blog help us with our freelance writing work?

The answer for all of these questions is a resounding YES!

Family Footnote has become a solid writing home for both of us. It serves as an amazing resume when we reach out to other outlets for publication, and it also keeps us rooted to a smart, fun, and compassionate narrative that we want for every single piece of writing we submit to the world.

My top articles with Family Footnote over the years are some of my favorite ones of all-time.

They are:

  1. To the Drunk Driver Who Killed My Sister-in-Law

  2. Coffee Cup Chats: Nut Allergies

  3. Saying No…

  4. Strong-Willed Children

  5. Military Grandparents

This list of work pays homage to my weaknesses as a mother and a person, while also at times showcased the comical side of my life. The posts vary in tone, as some are filled with grief or frustration, while others focus on empathy and pride. There is also some raw emotion and moments of vulnerability in a few of these articles, which felt good to get down on paper via the creative process. I enjoyed seeing that two of my top five articles were profile pieces. Interviewing others is my second favorite thing to do after writing. Talking and listening to people with amazing stories or different perspectives during the question and answer process gives me a refreshing outlook on life and certain social matters. I also learn a lot from the people I interview, and I truly hope that their knowledge gets passed on to our wonderful readers in an effective manner.

Looking back at the past two years of blogging, interviewing, publishing, and storytelling makes me so happy. Staying home with my kids is something I am fortunate to be able to do, and writing offers me an identity outside of motherhood that I absolutely crave. Sure there are days where I am probably failing at both feats (parenting and writing), but typically life’s daily grind leaves me feeling complete and satisfied.

I have Family Footnote, Tessa, and our readers to thank for this feeling of accomplishment. Thank you for giving our writing voice a home and an audience that is so very special. We look forward to bringing more quality content in the near and far future!
