9/11: Where Were You?

It has been 17 years since the 9/11 attacks, yet it is a day that will always stand clear. Hearts are still broken for all of the lost lives.

Where Were You?

Kelly

I was at college and standing in the student union. I had an early class that morning and a little time to kill, so I called my dad from a pay phone to just say hello. As we were chatting all of the mounted televisions began to show a screen of the towers with smoke and fire. Students were crowding around the televisions to see what was happening. I remember it so well. The rest of the day led to canceled classes and so much unrest.

Tessa

Tessa was teaching in a practicum experience in a junior high school. She was brand new to the education field and spent the entire school day trying to make sense of things right along side all of her young students.

Talking to my daughter Kelly on the phone as 9/11 news attacks were coming across our news wires at work. Everyone in my office was in disbelief….reminded us all of knowing where you were when JFK was shot.

I still recall you and I on the phone (me on a pay phone…how times have changed!) and I saw groups of students congregating in front of the TV’s. It was so unreal and I was thankful that you were on the other end of the line.

I met my two friends to walk that morning. I didn’t watch TV before leaving the house and heard from them that there had been a jet hitting one of the buildings. By the time we finished walking, we found out that it had not been an accident but an intentional hit, plus the Pentagon had also been involved. Very unsettling days while stories/reports changed. A lot of misinformation. I was uneasy with family living in the Twin Cities since some reports indicated other major cities could be targets. It certainly did remind us of the JFK assassination. Troubling times.

Jan-I knew someone working in Chicago’s Sears Tower and they all had to evacuate. So much panic and unrest. Thank you for sharing!

I was teaching in the same classroom I teach in today. My students turned on TV at the end of a block to watch WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE in time to see the 2nd aircraft hit the tower live. I didn’t believe it. I made them check the other channels because if it’s real, multiple channels cover a breaking story. We were all devastated.

Thank you for sharing your story Vickie. Teachers and students had to grapple with a lot of heartache and heavy information that dark day.
