On This Mother’s Day: A Tribute To My Children

On Mother’s Day, we usually celebrate our mothers. I enjoy the cute crafts my kids make, a solo trip to Target, and maybe even a quiet afternoon of writing while my husband wrangles the children, but this year, I want to celebrate the humans who made me a mom. Here’s what I love about each of them in a tribute of sorts.

My Oldest

I love that you made me a mother. From day one it seemed you didn’t need me at all. You came out focused and ready to achieve goals. From day one I could tell you were fiercely independent and very intelligent. In three weeks, you’ll be a high school freshman, and I see the very same traits coming out that emerged when you were a toddler. It makes me smile that some things have never changed.

You always want to be outside in -20 degrees or 110. You love any sport that has a ball attached, and you’re still wildly independent. I cherish those times when you “sort of” need me. They usually include food or sickness. As I watch you plow your own path in this world, I will always be here, watching you achieve those goals you’ve set, incredibly proud of the man you are becoming.

My Middle

You stole my heart the minute you entered this world. I’ll never forget how quiet you were in your first few minutes of life, like you were already observing and taking notes about the world surrounding you. Those were the last few moments of quiet you’d ever provide us. You’ve been an entertainer and a beautiful mind from the beginning. I enjoy your impersonations, your sweet giggle, and the love you have for animals and children.

I am so proud of the way you treat younger kids who look up to you, and your artistic ability is incredible. You’re ornery, passionate, and hilarious and your dad and I don’t know what we’d do without you.

My Youngest

You are someone we didn’t know we needed until we met you. You are our peace in so many ways. You were sweet and considerate from the beginning, making sure to sleep through the night the first month of life. You’re sensitive and caring and fiercely honest. We never know what you’re going to say, but we always know what’s on your mind. You’re a reader like your mama and a lefty like your daddy.

I watch you make friendships and tend to them so carefully. You are a great friend and someone I can’t wait to watch take on this world. I adore your authoritative nature, and that you’re my yoga partner. Mostly, I love that you call me “mama” and I hope you never stop.

I’ve written about the beautiful chaos my family brings with it in other posts, but this post is a tribute to my children. You gave me the most important title in the entire world. I am your biggest fan, your constant supporter, and forever your mama.

Tell us about your children! What do you adore about the humans who call you mom?
