The Thankful Time of Year

Thanksgiving is one of my fave holidays. The long weekend and too much yummy food make for a surefire good time. I am thankful for Thanksgiving Day because it means a break from the school chaos, youth sports carpooling, and busy workdays. There is also plenty of time spent with family and friends which makes my heart feel good.

No matter the time of year there is always a reason to give thanks. And a thankful list can help put things in perspective. It can also highlight that despite COVID-19, mean politics, and general unease there are still a lot of great things happenings.

I’m Very Thankful For…

  • Two boys who frequently get spiderwebs and lightning bolts shaved into their heads. It never gets old and it makes me feel like the coolest mom on the planet.
  • My oldest who insists we wait until after Thanksgiving to put up any shred of holiday decor. And her younger sister who rebels and has Christmas decals already up and all over her bedroom windows.
  • A husband who is pretty much always fun to be around no matter the setting. Be it going to Lambeau Field for a much-needed adult trip or just getting bleacher butt at an indoor soccer tournament.
  • Our rescue mutt. She is cuddly, loving, and street smart enough to take down anything in our walking path that smells of troubled concern. Be it a muskrat or mean stranger.

Also Good to Give Thanks to:

  • Science. I made it through college biology, but English Lit was always more my jam. Thank you to the ones who commit their life to research, medicine, and all that nitty-gritty lab work that makes the world better.
  • Local Newspapers. Quit thinking about “fake news” and know that smaller communities with a good newspaper spread kindness, logic, and current events. It is important to know what is happening locally. And in my neighborhood, all should vouch that our area has one of the best weekly papers. I enjoy writing for the Dakota Dunes/North Sioux City Times because they are dedicated to the people, businesses, and local school. Rural areas and bedroom cities thrive when they stay connected through communication. It is vital to take time to read local news. Every place I have ever lived, I have subscribed to the local paper and never regretted it. Plus the price tag is typically less than $1 a week for being in the know. Thank You for Guilty Pleasure

  • Coffee. Always coffee. That first cup in the morning is easily my biggest motivation to get out of bed. Early wake-ups are better when I can take fifteen seconds to breathe in the delicious aroma of ground beans and then achieve some resilience from that first sip of caffeine.
  • Chocolate Covered Pomegranates. It seems like every week I buy a bag and blame the kids for eating through these delicious sweet treats too fast. Then I feel guilty because it is really just me eating them. They are the one snack I rarely share.

Blog Thanks

Finally, I am thankful for readers. Because without them there would be no writers. And I would need a new day job.
